Anointing of the Sick at St. Vital Catholic Parish

This Scrament used to be known as "Last Rites" or "Extreme Unction," and the belief that is only to be received before death, is a misunderstanding.

The Anointing of the Sick is one of the Sacraments that may be received more than once. The proper time to receive this holy anointing is when the believer begins to be in danger of death because of injury, illness or advanced years. Each time a Christian falls seriously ill they may receive the Anointing of the Sick.

The Sacrament is often received:
• Before surgery, or a serious medical procedure.
• During a long-term or terminal illness.
• When health issues related to old age arise.

The Anointing of the Sick is a prayer of physical and spiritual healing. Through this prayer we seek the strength, peace, and courage needed to accept the illness. Although it is not necessariy intended, the sacrament can bring a great deal of comfort to family and friends of the recipient.

The Anointing of the Sick also imparts the forgiveness of sins, and therefore can only be administered by a priest or bishop.

The Anointing of the Sick is available any time, upon request. Please contact the parish priest at 306-937-7340.
